D. Afonso Henriques, the 1st King of Portugal was proclaimed king in Lamego in 1143.
One of the most historic and monumental cities of the Country, fought for by different peoples: Moors, Celts, Visigoths, etc, that have inhabited the Iberian Peninsula since the 5th century.
It is a noble and episcopal city of strong festivity and gastronomy tradition and soft customs, also visited by thousands of pilgrims.
It is precisely known as a town of good smoked ham, the ?B?la? (a kind of sweet bread) from Lamego, the best sparkling wine (Raposeira/ Murganheira), the good Port and table Wines and good fruit. And so many other products welcomed in the good Portuguese table such as olives and cheese, etc.
The handicraft is diversified based mainly in the wood clogs and the famous ?Lazarim? carnival masks, hand wood carved.
The water that comes out from several Lamego springs is still today mainly pure and crystal clear.
The town is proud of its manor houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, the old castle and the beautiful churches, the cathedral with special highlight for the chapels of the cloister and the Nasoni frescos.
Inside the 17 exhibition rooms? museum established in what was once the Bishop?s Palace, one can admire pieces of inestimable value.
The staircase of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Rem?dios, with almost 700 steps, beautiful tiles and located at the top of the St. Estev?o hill are enough reasons for a visit to Lamego.
